The Xian City Wall is not only the most complete city wall that has survived in China, but it's also one of the largest and most complete ancient military systems of defense in the world. The city wall is massive,because of its strategic importance, it were built tall, long and thick, the total perimeter of the city wall is 11.9 km. The South Gate and North Gate are the two main entrances to the inner city. The city itself is neatly arranged along the city wall.
The city walls here were actually built on the fortifications of the Tang Forbidden City. The military defense facilities here including the city wall, city moat, drawbridges, watchtowers, corner towers, parapet walls and gate towers once made up a complete city defense system. Many sections have since been destroyed and the city walls are incomplete. The wall does not stretch around the entire city.
Characteristic of the city wall The magnificent and grandiose Xian City Wall was constructed in the early Ming Dynasty on the basis of the Imperial City of Chang An (ancient Xian) of the Tang Dynasty. It is also a representative of great significance of the famous historic cultural city of Xian. One of the features of the Xian Wall lies in the fact that it has been preserved intact, which is rarely seen in the world. The construction of the Xian City was formally started in the seventh year of Emperor Hongwu's reign (1374) and completed in the eleventh year of Hongwu's reign (1378). The perimeter of the city wall was 13.75 kilometers long in an oblong shape after its completion. 12 meters in height; its top is 12-14 meters wide and its base, 15-18 meters wide. There are four watchtowers at the four corners. Moats are outside the wall. There are four city gates, and to each of them are three tower entrances: sluice tower, embrasures watchtower and the main tower and in between are enceinte. There are 98 watching enemy platforms between the watchtowers and the city gates, protruding over the city wall, which is not only convenient for watching the enemy, but also to shoot them with bows and arrows from three sides and firing wooden cannon stones by taking the advantages. There are 5984 crenels served as lookout posts, firing at the enemy and shield of protection. They formed a close engineering system of defense. You can get up on the walls at the east of the railway station and at the south gate adjacent to the provincial museum. A circular park has been built along the high wall and the deep moat. The thriving trees and flowers decorate the classical Chinese architecture of the wall, adding additional beauty to the city of Xian.
